coral coverage

Day 3: July 1

Today our main goal was to complete a transect. A transect is a scientific method to estimate the percent cover of certain species in a whole area. We carried out both a normal transect (pictures down a 20 m line) and a point quarter (down a 20 m line with pictures every 90 degrees every 2 m) . We were looking for percent cover of different types of coral in each picture. The class was split in to two groups and we each collected our own set of data, to be compared later. We did half the work before lunch and half after. The data more or less looked like this most of the time.

The different species of coral analyzed are brain coral, stag horn coral, starlet coral, honeycomb coral as well as sea fans and sea plumes.

A man from a nearby island comes by time to time to take some coconuts to sell on his island. In exchange got enough down for all of the guests and cut them all open. Can you scale a vertical tree? This guy can.

After dinner, we had a lecture about symbiotic relationships. After that, we worked on analyzing the 100 some pictures we had captured for our transect. I think tomorrow we will compare them with the other groups findings.
