coconuts have my heart

Day 2: June 30

We had our first lecture this morning after breakfast. Keeping with the island vibes we took a break before we went snorkeling. You can find me on the communal hammocks during most breaks.

We went out to a different reef today. It was a more successful trip as we have almost mastered fin etiquette and how to travel in a group. We spent our time looking at species and trying to make mental notes as we can then identity them later in the reference books. I saw a spiny lobster come out of its cave. There are lots of brain coral and sea fans with many other species intertwined. A lot of fish hang out under corals/rocks/other 'shelfs' and you can see a lot of them if you are patient. There were a lot of Comb jellies on the way out.

(I did not bring my own camera and the professors cameras for the class have yet to arrive so for now, other people's pictures)

Never would I describe a coconut as 'startling' but when one falls from a tree not too far from my head,  surly do. After surviving, the near hit, Olivia and myself promptly got a more qualified persons to cut it open with a machete. We drank the water, which I think tastes like milky water (not great), but some like it. After it was sucked dry by the group we got too the best part. I happily gnawed away at the fresh fruit; it can be considered a fruit or a seed but decidedly not a nut.

I ended the night with a sunset, a birthday cake (Sophia's), and some journal writing ( where I write more scientifically about what we did each day) when my bed fell in. The wood had splintered for various reasons (heat, time etc.) and fell into the frame. I went on about it for a bit to Sophia and Grace in the next room, got over it and off to sleep.
